Wallydocking: an RV term used to
describe "urban stays outside of a RV park" and covers "stealth camping" "front
yard camping" "Flying J / truckstops"
"Wal-Mart / retail parking lots" and other similar situations.
We've probably all done it, and those that haven't, have at the very least
thought about it. That's right, spent the night in a Wal-Mart parking lot.
Most Wal-Marts provide only space for the
RV's to park, not electrical hookups or dumping stations. The company says
its invitation to RV's, which has been in place for decades, is not
predatory competition. "It is very simply an extension of customer
service,". Many RV owners agree, and Wal-Mart camping has drawn an informal
but enthusiastic following. Wal-Mart, Flying J, Cracker Barrel, Petro and any number of retail parking
lots are RV friendly. These merchants know the value of offering ample
parking for large rigs. We become customers for all the goods and services
that sustain these businesses. Whether your spending the night at Wal-Mart
or Campingworld, once you've had your morning coffee and walked the dog you
head in to buy what you need and shop for the latest gizmo. Emerging from
the store with your latest acquisition and a new stash of trash bags with
little smiley faces on them, your ready to set out for the destination you
failed to reach yesterday.
The Escapees along with FMCA and the Airstream Association (WBCCI) have
proposed the following "Good Neighbor" policy with regard to "parking lot
wallydocking":
Stay one night only.
Obtain permission from a qualified individual.
Obey posted regulations.
No awnings, chairs or barbeque grills.
Do not use hydraulic jacks on soft surfaces
(including asphalt).
Always leave an area cleaner than you found it.
Purchase gas, food, or supplies as a form of thank
you, when feasible.
Be safe!
Always be aware of your surroundings and leave if
you feel unsafe.
All That being said, to help explain the website name,
please stay awhile and look around.
